LAW ELECTRIC BICYCLES

There are different laws and rules for electric bicycles, some are stranger than others, but if you ask a police officer, they will hardly know themselves, but according

to the Swedish Transport Agency, it is like this.

A bicycle with electric assistance must be constructed in the following way to be considered a bicycle.

The electric motor is switched on when you pedal, for example to make it easier to pedal uphill and in strong headwinds.

The motor must only amplify the power of the pedals and must not provide any additional power at speeds above 25 km/h

. The net power of the motor must not exceed 250 watts.

An e-bike has neither an age limit nor a driving licence requirement. It is not compulsory to wear a helmet, although it is advisable to wear a helmet when cycling. You can give a lift to a child under 10 years of age if you are over 15 years of age and there is a suitable seat for the passenger. If you are over 18, you may carry 2 children aged 6 or under. Again, if there is a suitable seat.

If an electrically assisted bicycle deviates from these requirements, the vehicle will be considered to be motorised, specifically a moped.

MOTORISED BICYCLE

A motorised bicycle is considered a class II moped. This applies:

The engine may have a continuous rated power of 250-1000W.

The maximum speed with electric assistance is 25 km/h

You do not need to pedal to get electric assistance.

Requirement for driving licence, tractor licence or class II moped licence

Age limit 15 years

The vehicle must have traffic insurance

Helmet requirement

You may give a lift if a suitable place is available, same rule as for electric bicycles.

You may drive on a cycle track if no sign prohibits class II mopeds.
